Apprenticeship Award Programs

Each year Merit Nova Scotia chooses a graduating Merit member company apprentice as Merit Journeyperson of the Year.  To be eligible, the employee must be employed by a Merit member company and be nominated by his/her employer.

Awards are based on the information provided by the employer in the following categories:

Attitude, Technical Skills, Practical Skills, Efficiency, Leadership, Flexibility, Communication Skills, Safety Orientated, Team Player, Reliability, Additional Courses and Community Involvement.

Apprentice Tuition Reimbursement Program (Benefit Members Only)

Merit Contractors Association of Nova Scotia provides partial Apprenticeship Tuition Reimbursement for eligible apprentices.

To be eligible for the Tuition Reimbursement Program, the following requirements must be met:

  1. employment by a Merit member company and in benefit for a minimum of three months prior to attending the block training,
  2. successful completion of the training course (no more than two courses in one calendar year), and
  3. a return to work for a Merit Member Company participating in the benefit plan.

Applications must be received by the Merit office within two months of completion of the course. For prompt processing, ensure all required information is provided.

Tuition Reimbursement Application

Merit Contractors Construction Trade Award 

A $1,000 award is awarded annually in the fall and is open to graduates of CANS Building Futures for Youth program and graduates of the O2 (Options & Opportunities) program who are entering their first year of full-time studies in one of the programs in the School of Trades & Technology at NSCC.  (Details)

Heather Cruickshanks Women in Trades Award

A $1,000 award will be given annually in the fall awards cycle to a female NSCC community college student entering the trades.  (Details)

Skills Canada – Nova Scotia Competition

Merit apprentices are eligible to receive support from Merit Nova Scotia if they compete in the Skills Competition.
